Reggie White, Chattanooga native, died December 26, 2004

Reggie White, born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, died on December 26, 2004, at age 43 from cardiac arrhythmia related to sarcoidosis and sleep apnea. He was known for his long NFL career as a dominant defensive end, earning 198 career sacks and multiple awards, including two NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. White played for the Memphis Showboats, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers. He helped lead the Packers to a Super Bowl XXXI win. He was also an ordained minister, earning the nickname “Minister of Defense.” White attended Howard High School in Chattanooga, where he first gained recognition for his football talent. His success continued at the University of Tennessee, where he became a unanimous All-American. White later became active in ministry and community work. His death brought attention to sleep apnea, leading to the creation of a foundation in his name to promote sleep disorder awareness and care access.
