This week in Hamilton County history.

Born December 19, 1961, in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Reginald Howard White was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on December 19, 1961. He played high school football locally before earning unanimous All-American honors at the University of Tennessee. White began his professional career with the Memphis Showboats before joining the NFL, where he played 15 seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers. He earned two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, 13 Pro Bowls, and won Super Bowl XXXI with the Packers. White retired as the NFL’s second all-time sack leader with 198 sacks and was a key figure in establishing free agency. Beyond football, he was an ordained minister known as the “Minister of Defense.” White passed away in 2004. Chattanooga honors his legacy with Reggie White Boulevard. His number 92 jersey is retired by multiple teams, and he is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
