Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Garrett Engle is this week’s Southern Conference Golfer of the Week the league office announced Wednesday. Engle is coming off his first career top 5 finish doing it against a top-flight field at the Linger Longer Invitational.

Engle shot 5-under 211, one off his best 54-hole total as a Moc. He beat all 19 other Southern Conference golfers in the field by an average of 22.63 strokes. His back-to-back 5 under performances have him at 4 over through 18 rounds this season.

He went 14-2-1 against the group of 17 top 100 golfers per Golfstat at Great Waters Course. That included a 2-0-1 ledger against the top 10 members tying national No. 1 Gordon Sargent (Vanderbilt) in fourth.

“I walked all 54 holes with ‘G’ this week,” Coach Blaine Woodruff began. “I’m really proud of how he played, especially after his first nine holes. He was 9 under on his final 45 which was almost the winning score individually.

“He’s worked really hard on his game and in trusting the process by playing to his strengths and owning his game. He’s let the results come instead of trying to make them happen. We’re pumped for him to be in contention this week against that field. He should be really excited to build off it!”

Engle’s work helped the Mocs to impressive victories. That included bettering No. 16 Virginia by 25 shots as well as top 50 wins over No. 44 Arkansas (8 strokes) and No. 37 UNC Greensboro (by 36).

He led the field with 18 birdies, a season high for a Moc in 2022-23 topping John Houk’s 17 in the season-opening Streamsong Invite. Engle was par or better on every hole type playing the par 3s at even, par 4s at 2 under and a 3 under tally on the par 5s. He was 5 over on his first eight holes before playing the final 49 at 10 under.

The Mocs are back on the tee April 3-4 in Spartanburg, S.C. The squad takes on the Country Club of Spartanburg in the Wofford Invitational.
