The Chattanooga Mocs softball team swept Mercer on Apr. 3 in a Southern Conference doubleheader at Frost Stadium, winning the first game 8-0 in five innings and taking the second game 6-5 after ten innings.
The sweep marks an important moment for the Mocs, who improved their season record to 15-20-1 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Mercer fell to 15-20 overall with an identical conference record of 3-5.
In the opening game, Chattanooga broke open a scoreless contest with a six-run third inning. The team sent twelve batters to the plate during that frame, collecting six hits and leaving the bases loaded. Key moments included an RBI single up the middle by one player to start the rally, followed by additional runs scored through singles, walks, and a hit-by-pitch. A solo home run led off the fourth inning for Chattanooga as they secured a run-rule victory after holding Mercer to just two hits over five innings.
The second game saw Chattanooga come back from an early five-run deficit before tying it up in the sixth inning and eventually walking off with a win in extra innings. The Mocs answered Mercer’s initial outburst with two runs of their own before adding more throughout various frames. Strong relief pitching played a significant role as one pitcher delivered over five shutout innings while another held Mercer scoreless through three-plus extra frames.
Offensively, several players contributed multiple hits across both games; one went five-for-eight on the day while another drove in four runs total. The walk-off win was Chattanooga’s fifth such finish this season.
Chattanooga will conclude its series against Mercer on Saturday at Frost Stadium at 1:00 p.m., with tickets available online or at the stadium ticket booth.
