The Chattanooga softball team secured two walk-off victories against Furman on May 2 at Frost Stadium, improving its record to 21-27-1 overall and 9-11 in the Southern Conference. Furman’s record dropped to 13-38 for the season and 5-15 in conference play.
These games are significant as they help Chattanooga build momentum heading into the final game of the regular season and prepare for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament. The doubleheader featured a six-inning win capped by a home run and a ten-inning contest decided by scoring the ghost runner.
In Game One, Chattanooga won 9-0 in six innings. The Mocs took an early lead with runs in the second and third innings before breaking away with four runs in the fourth. Another run came in during the fifth, followed by a two-run homer that ended the game via walk-off. The pitching staff limited Furman to just two hits while striking out five batters.
Game Two was more dramatic, ending with a score of 7-6 after ten innings. After trailing early, Chattanooga tied up and then took their first lead of the game in later innings before Furman forced extra frames by tying it up again in the seventh inning. In extras, both teams left runners stranded until Chattanooga scored their ghost runner for another walk-off win after three hours of play.
Looking ahead, Chattanooga will close out its regular season on Sunday afternoon against Furman, honoring nine seniors before first pitch at 2:05 p.m. The Southern Conference Tournament begins Wednesday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m., where teams will compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
