The Chattanooga softball team lost 5-2 to Mercer on April 4 in the series finale at Jim Frost Stadium, following a lengthy weather delay caused by lightning.
The game began with Chattanooga taking an early lead, but play was suspended after lightning struck within a ten-mile radius. The suspension lasted for one hour and seventeen minutes, affecting the momentum of both teams.
After play resumed, Mercer tied the game in the second inning with a lead-off home run. The Bears then added three runs in the fourth inning on three hits to extend their lead to 4-1. Chattanooga responded in the fifth inning when Pitts singled and later scored on a double by Carlyle, narrowing the deficit to 4-2. However, Mercer scored once more in the sixth inning and maintained their advantage for the rest of the game.
Chattanooga recorded eight hits and drew three walks during the contest. Pitts went two-for-two with two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base. Carlyle contributed by going three-for-three at bat while Leone hit a double and drove in a run. The Mocs’ pitcher completed all seven innings with six strikeouts.
